Vince and Joy by Lisa Jewell

Two teenagers experience the summer of a lifetime as they fall in love for the first time. However, an unfortunate event leads the two to separate and lose contact. Years later, Vince and Joy are living their own separate lives, and circumstances bring them together again, and apart. Can first love being the one and only love in their lives?

This is a sweet love story, made more poignant by how the two main characters never meet or realise that they should be together until the end. The first section depicting the caravan holiday was quite detailed and explicit – a bit too much for my liking, but the way that Vince and Joy felt love for each other was good. How the story is revealed bit by bit was an effective story telling device and kept me gripped. It was quite frustrating to see Vince and Joy drift apart and lead sad lives when it was clear that they loved each other, but when they meet again, it is worth it. The ending is quite unusual in that we never see the two main characters get together but the way in which Vince reflects on the holiday before he enters the house was touching. 3.5 stars.
